Casandra’s Recipe Notes and Tips
Cooking a steak on grill is wonderful but also a little bit risky for anyone that isnโt a barbecue master. Grilling sounds easy but temperature control can be volatile and timing can be inconsistent. And if youโre a one man (or woman) show trying to get dinner to the table, you donโt have time to babysit a barbecue.
An air fryer can help you get that perfect cook on your steak while also freeing up your time to finish the rest of the cooking. The air fryer I use a NINJA 9-1 and I love it. All you need is the right temperature and time and you are all set to make the perfect air fried steakโฆ and maybe some seasonings and fat.
About the Ingredients
Porterhouse steak – I used a 2 pound porterhouse steak from oakbarnbeef.com. Itโs a rib eye + filet mignon combo cut with the bone in. The weight to steak and the size of them bone effect the cooking time but as long as youโre close on weight you should be good to follow the time suggestions.
Olive oil – fat is what helps make that dark brown crispy golden crust on the outside of the meat. Beef has a lot of fat on itโs own but you really need the extra to get it just right. You could also substitute butter (or seasoned butter if youโre extra fancy.)
Salt and Pepper – be liberal with the seasonings. It will seam like a lot but I promise more is more in this case.
How to Cook Porterhouse Steak in Air Fryer
Brush the steak on all sides with olive oil. Sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. โLiberallyโ is going to seem like a lot. Iโm talking about at least a tablespoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of pepper. This will help get you that perfect crust and flavor.
Preheat the air fryer to 400ยฐ for 5 minutes. Place the steak in the air fryer on a rack, not a basket, and set the air fryer to cook at 400ยฐ for 20 minutes.
Keep in mind that the temperature of the steak will rise as the meat rests. For medium rare temperature when serving, the steak should be cooked to an internal temperature of 135ยฐF – 140ยฐF before resting.ย
Remove the steak to a cutting board and cover with foil to let rest for 5-10 minutes. Slice the steak across the grain and serve with MUSHROOM BORDELAISE SAUCE.ย
Frequently Asked Questions
How to air fry rib eye steak?
Rib eye steak needs less time than a porterhouse because of size but will cook similarly. Air fryer rib eye steak should cook at 400ยฐ for 15 minutes for medium rare.
Do you need to flip steak in an air fryer?
No, you do not need to flip a steak in the air fryer, especially when its cooked on a wire rack. The air will circulate around the steak and it will cook through evenly.
Do I put oil on steak before air frying?
Yes, fat is what helps make that dark brown crispy golden crust on the outside of the meat. Beef has a lot of fat on itโs own but you really need the extra to get it just right. You could also substitute butter.
How long to cook steak in air fryer at 400ยฐF?
This depends on the thickness and size of the steak and whether or not it has a bone. A 2 pound bone-in porterhouse should cook for about 20 minutes. The temperature should read between 135ยฐ-140ยฐF before resting for a medium rare temperature.
