I love my wooden spoons so much that they are one of the few things I allow to live on my kitchen counter – which if you know me is a pretty big deal. Not a day goes by that I don’t reach for one while cooking. I use them for sautéing vegetables, making sauces, stirring anything simmering in a pot.. pretty much anything happening on the stove other than crumbling or flipping raw meat. Aside from the fact that tongs are the better tool for flipping things over, the wood is porous and the meat bacteria probably isn’t too easy to effectively clean off 100% and that’s mostly because wooden spoons live a longer life if you don’t run them through the dishwasher. The high heat and abrasive soap will dry them out and over time probably leave some cracks in them. That’s why I always hand wash them and about once a week I oil them with food grade mineral oil like this one on Amazon.
My all-time favorite wooden spoon set is from Pampered Chef. The shapes and sizes are universal and the quality is high. They’re made of bamboo which holds up really well with heavy use. I’ve yet to have one crack or splinter in the 7+ years I’ve been using them daily. Wooden spoons are easy on your pots and pans, never leave scratches and don’t over heat. They’re good for just about everything… except cheese. Melted cheese is the wooden spoon’s worst enemy.
